When things are going well, it’s easy to have a positive attitude. But when life throws curve balls things get difficult in a hurry and it’s hard to stay in a good frame of mind. Remember, when times get tough they won’t stay that way forever. You already know it is easier said than done. Therefore, it is important to know what actions to take to stay focused so you can work through it. Here is what you can do to encourage a positive mindset when things become difficult.
Get in good company. Talk to someone who can give you valuable advice. When things are not going the way you hoped, the last thing you need is to be around negative or miserable people. Surround yourself with others who can help you feel better instead of worse.
Visualize positive actions and images. Things may not look the way you want them to but shift your focus on achieving a solution to overcome the issue. If you are willing, there is a way to figure it out. Create a vision of action you can take and follow through. It helps to take a few deep breaths and establish a state of calm to help you think.
Create a list of things that make you happy. Establish a list of actions that make you feel good. You can refer to this list anytime you feel like you can’t figure you way out of something. You can put anything you want on the list that brings good feelings such as your accomplishments, nice things others have done for you, certain people, or favorite meals. The purpose of the list is to get your mind in a positive place.
Tell yourself you will be okay and you will get through this. Affirmations help get your mind in a good atmosphere while building self-esteem. It can prevent your mind from getting into a negative state; something many find themselves getting into that lead to thinking and talking negatively. Tell yourself “I am strong, I am a fighter, and I will make it through.” Know that it will pass.
Listen to music or words of motivation. Music, at times, can portray the mood you’re in while helping your mind get into a better mode. Calming music like jazz is great if you’re feeling upset. If you don’t want to listen to music, consider words from a motivational speaker. Look for speech content based on a theme. You could also watch a movie with the main character dealing with difficulties and how they overcame them.
Do a little self-pampering or a mini makeover. It may not seem like the time to get a new look, but sometimes stepping back from the situation to do something for yourself can give you another perspective on how to handle things moving forward. Changing up your appearance can encourage a better attitude.
Being around others with a positive attitude is helpful. When you don’t have family or friends to be with, consider support groups online. Some look at a higher power (divine intervention or their religion) and prayer to help them establish an outlook on positivity. People go through times of difficulty as a part of living. It is a challenge to be positive when times are tough. It’s okay when you can’t be positive all the time, just don’t let the worst of times get the best of you.
