Depression and the Bible: Uplifting Quotes to Help You Through

If you struggle with depression and wonder if the Bible can help you manage or help you out of your depression, the answer is a resounding yes! The Bible is full of inspirational and encouraging literature and has helped many people overcome depression.

If you read the Bible from start to finish, you’ll notice that God wants his people to be happy and joyful, with a heart that is full of gratitude and love for God and others. Philippians 4:4 states, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

When David was struggling with depression and other negative emotions, he cried out to God as written in Psalm 51:10, 12, “"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit."

The salvation that God talks about is to be a life full of joy. In Psalm 147:3 it states that God heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. Psalm 55:22 tells us to cast our burdens on God, and he shall sustain or help us.

These are simply a few of the hundreds of verses in the Bible that let us know that God not only cares about our emotional state but has the ability and motivation to help lift us from depression and experience his love and joy.

If you are struggling with depression, it is important to evaluate the severity of your depression. Sometimes situations and circumstances in life contribute to getting us down and depressed, but sometimes it goes beyond that, and it can be related to psychological or biological factors. Even though in religious circles it may be frowned upon to seek professional help, sometimes it is necessary for evaluation. There are plenty of Christian counselors available that will meet with you and discuss your situation and offer advice and various treatment options if indeed you are clinically depressed.

The key is to recognize if you have a problem with depression. Is your depression affecting your life in ways that are not healthy? Have you withdrawn or isolated yourself from others or from doing things that you once enjoyed? Is your thinking primarily negative? Do you simply not care about much anymore?

Get uplifting inspiration in the Bible by reading it regularly. Pray daily and ask God to help you to understand his word and the message he wants you to know at this time. Ask God to help you find the solutions to your issues. If you do this and feel that you are not getting better, then consider going to your pastor, a support group, or a counselor for further assistance.

Depression can be managed and overcome. Paul stated in Philippians 4:13 that he could do everything through Christ, who gave him strength. God can give you strength so you can do what is necessary through Christ. Let the word of God guide you toward the freedom you want from depression.
